CLASS OFFERINGS

Ballet (ages 5 through adult)

A study of grace and elegance, ballet is an art form with a history that extends back hundreds of years, yet still with the power to thrill audiences and challenge both beginning and advanced students. Our ballet classes follow the traditional educational format of barre, center work, and choreography, training students to move gracefully yet with precision and full-body coordination.

Jazz (ages 6 to 18)

Jazz dance evolved from social dances of the early 20th century, such as the Cakewalk and the Charleston--a high-energy, all-elbows-and-angles dance style that had couples at New York City's Savoy Ballroom swinging and spinning all night long. Over the years, other influences--Cuban rhythms, ballet, Broadway, disco, and Soul Train--impacted jazz. Today many different "types" of jazz dance are equally important. What has never changed, though, is jazz's inherent energy and undeniable musicality.
Tap (ages 6 to adult)

Rhythm and percussive sound are so much a part of tap dance that many of the greatest tappers consider themselves musicians.  Tap is a pure American invention, created when West African rhythms met Irish dance traditions. To tap, a student must have a sharp mind, an agile body, and a willing spirit--stray for just a second, and the rhythm will carry on without you.
Tiny Tots (first year dancers ages 3-4)
Preschool (second year dancers ages 4-5)
Creative Movement (both first and second year dancers ages 3-5)
Kinder Movement (dancers must at least be in kindergarten - ages 5-6)

Our Early Childhood Program features age-developmentally appropriate classes geared to gently introduce children to the educational experience. Lessons include imagination exploration, introduction to basic dance steps and movements, and socialization, presented with lots of positive reinforcement and encouragement!
*Tiny Tots, Pre-School, & Creative Movement are 45 minutes, while Kindermovement is 30 minutes of ballet and 30 minutes of tap.
Acrobatics (ages 5 to 18)

Our acro dance classes are build on a system of progressive learning: students master simple movements (bridges, headstands, etc.) before moving on to more advanced moves (aerials/handsprings). These classes are level based and not age based. Student safety is paramount, and our Acrobatic Arts certified teachers fully understand proper spotting and use of equipment.
Hip-Hop (ages 6 to 18)

Athleticism, musicality, rhythm & groove - hip-hop has it all. Our lessons pull from a variety of hip-hop styles, from popping and locking to breakdance, with an emphasis on individual style and personal creativity. A favorite of energetic dancers of all ages.
Musical Theater (ages 6 to 18)

Our musical theater classes combine study of acting and dance, with the goal of improving each student's ability to create a character onstage. Weekly acting games allow students to work on their focus and improvisation skills, while each month's curriculum leads students through age-appropriate choreography for a dance from a Broadway or movie musical.
Irish Step (ages 5 to 18)

The proud tradition of Irish step dancing has a home at Spotlight.  Students work on the style's rhythms, intricate footwork, and distinctive upper-body posture, discovering that this style is deceptively challenging, and yet full of energy and spirit. Classes in both soft and hard shoe are offered.

Contemporary (ages 10 to 18)

A dance style that is "of the current time," contemporary seeks to connect dancers to the emotion behind a concept or piece of music with highly individualized, fresh movements that range from pedestrian (simple walking) to complex (falls; floor work.) Contemporary draws from modern dance's sense of grounding and internal strength as well as ballet's lines and lift.
Pointe (with permission of SDS ballet faculty only)

Pointe work is ballet performed on specialized shoes that requires dancers to balance on the tips of their toes. Extremely difficult, requiring great physical strength and strong technique, pointe work allows advanced students to challenge themselves physically and as artists.

Students are placed in classes by age, ability and level of training. Students demonstrating strong dance abilities will be moved into a higher age group and/or level at the discretion of the studio director or class instructor.
