Jazz dance evolved from social dances of the early 20th century, such as the Cakewalk and the Charleston--a high-energy, all-elbows-and-angles dance style that had couples at New York City's Savoy Ballroom swinging and spinning all night long. Over the years, other influences--Cuban rhythms, ballet, Broadway, disco, and Soul Train--impacted jazz. Today many different "types" of jazz dance are equally important. What has never changed, though, is jazz's inherent energy and undeniable musicality.
